Popcorn Ceiling Removal Wichita

Prepping Your Wichita Home for Popcorn Ceiling Removal: Furniture, HVAC and Pets

A lot of popcorn ceiling jobs in Wichita happen in houses people are still living in. That is completely doable, but a little planning on your end makes the work faster, keeps the dust where it belongs, and usually lowers the bill. Here is what to sort out before the crew shows up, and what you can leave to us.

Furniture: empty is best, but you do not have to move out

An empty room is the cheapest and fastest room to do. If you can, clear small things out completely: lamps, pictures, books, plants, electronics, anything on shelves or dressers. Those are the items that collect dust and get in the way.

Big pieces like beds, couches and dressers can often stay. They get pushed to the middle of the room or to one side and wrapped in plastic. The catch is that the crew then works around them in sections, which adds time. That is one reason furnished rooms cost more than empty ones, as our cost page explains. If you have a garage or a spare room nobody needs that week, moving furniture there is worth the effort.

Take down curtains, blinds and anything hanging from the ceiling you want to keep, like a light fixture you plan to reuse. Ceiling fans usually come down or get bagged so they can be worked around.

HVAC: why the system gets shut off

Your furnace or air conditioner pulls air from every room and pushes it back out through the whole house. If it runs while texture is being scraped, fine dust can end up in the ducts and in rooms that were never part of the job. So the system for the work area gets turned off, and the supply vents and return grilles in that room get covered and taped.

In practice that means planning for a few days of less comfortable air in that part of the house. In a Wichita summer that can mean a warm room, and in winter a cool one. Spring and fall are the easiest seasons for this reason, but the work can be done any time of year. If the whole house is being done at once, ask how long the system will be off each day so you can plan around it. A fresh furnace filter after the job is cheap insurance.

Mud also dries differently with the furnace or AC running, so your crew may want the system on or off at certain points during the finish stage. Our timeline guide covers how drying time affects the schedule.

Smoke detectors, outlets and fixtures

Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors on the ceiling need to come down or be covered so dust does not set them off or clog them. Make sure they go back up and get tested when the work is done. Outlets and switches near the work get covered because the texture is wetted to bring it down, and water and electrical boxes do not mix. Light fixtures are usually removed and the wires capped.

Kids, pets and working from home

Plan to keep kids and pets out of the work area until cleanup is done. Plastic sheeting, ladders and wet floors are not a good mix with a curious dog or a toddler. If you work from home, pick a room on the far side of the house, or schedule the noisy scraping days around important calls. Scraping is the loud and messy part. Skim coating and sanding are quieter, but sanding still makes fine dust, so the plastic stays up until the end.

Test before anything gets disturbed

If your house was built or remodeled before about the mid 1980s, get the texture tested before prep starts. Moving furniture and taking down fixtures can knock texture loose, and you want to know what you are dealing with first. Our asbestos guide explains how testing works in Kansas.

What the crew handles

Covering floors and walls, masking vents and outlets, wetting and scraping the texture, bagging the debris, repairing the drywall, and the final cleanup are all part of the job. Your part is mostly clearing small items, deciding where furniture goes, and planning around a few days of the HVAC being off in that space. If you are not sure how much to move, ask when you get your quote and we will tell you what makes sense for your house.
