DIY vs Hiring a Pro for Popcorn Ceiling Removal in Wichita
We get it. Popcorn removal looks simple on YouTube. Spray some water, scrape, done. Plenty of Wichita homeowners do pull it off themselves, and we are happy to tell you honestly when that makes sense.
What a DIY job actually involves
The scraping is maybe a third of the work. First you test for asbestos if the house was built before the mid 80s. Then you cover floors, walls, and outlets in plastic, shut off the HVAC so dust does not travel, and wet the ceiling in small sections. After scraping you bag the mess, and then comes the part nobody shows on video: patching gouges, skim coating, sanding, priming, and painting.
Rough DIY costs
For a typical 12 by 14 bedroom you might spend $150 to $300 on a test kit, plastic, a pump sprayer, a wide scraper, joint compound, primer, and ceiling paint. That is cheap compared to a pro. The real cost is time. Most first timers spend a full weekend on one room and still have a ceiling that shows every flaw under a lamp.
When DIY makes sense
- The test came back negative for asbestos.
- It is one small room with flat 8 foot ceilings.
- The texture has never been painted, so water softens it.
- You are fine with a textured finish like knockdown that hides small mistakes.
When to call a pro
- The texture has been painted (see our painted popcorn guide).
- You want a smooth Level 5 finish.
- Vaulted ceilings, stairwells, or a whole house.
- Any positive asbestos result. That is not a DIY job in Kansas.
A crew can usually do a whole Wichita ranch in two to four days, finish included. Check our cost guide to compare against your weekend.
