Ceiling Finishes After Popcorn Removal
Once the popcorn is gone you are looking at bare drywall, and it is rarely as nice as people hope. The original crews knew the texture would hide their seams, so tape lines, nail pops and uneven joints are common. You have two good options for what comes next.
Smooth (skim coat)
A smooth ceiling is what most people picture. We spread thin coats of joint compound over the whole surface, sand between coats, then prime. It looks clean and modern and makes rooms feel brighter. The tradeoff is that smooth is honest. Light from a window at a low angle will show any flaw, so it takes more labor and costs more. On most Wichita jobs we recommend at least two full skim coats.
Knockdown
Knockdown is sprayed compound that gets lightly flattened with a wide knife before it dries, leaving a soft, mottled pattern. It hides small imperfections well, goes on faster, and costs less than a full skim. It is a good fit for bedrooms, hallways, and older homes where the drywall underneath is rough. It is also much easier to patch later than people expect.
Which one should you pick?
If the drywall is in decent shape and you like a modern look, go smooth. If the board is wavy, you are on a tighter budget, or you want something forgiving, knockdown is a solid choice. We are happy to show you samples at the estimate.
