Popcorn Ceiling Removal Wichita

Water Stains and Hail Damage on a Popcorn Ceiling in Wichita

Every spring and early summer we get the same calls. A storm rolls through, a few shingles lift or get punched by hail, and a week later there is a yellow or brown ring on the bedroom ceiling. If that ceiling has popcorn texture, the stain is only half the problem.

Fix the roof first

This sounds obvious, but people skip it. If the leak is still active, anything done to the ceiling gets ruined by the next rain. Get the roof looked at, and if hail was involved, it is worth talking to your insurance company before any ceiling work starts. Many Wichita homeowners end up with the interior repair folded into a hail claim. Take photos of the stain now, before anything gets touched.

Why you cannot just paint over the stain

Popcorn texture is basically a sponge. Water soaks in, the texture swells, and it often loosens from the drywall in that spot. You can dab stain blocking primer on it, but painting popcorn tends to pull chunks off, and the patched area almost never matches the rest of the room. Touching up popcorn with a spray can of texture usually looks like a touch up.

Check what is behind it

Once the texture is off, we can see the actual drywall. Small stains are often cosmetic. Soft, sagging, or crumbly drywall needs to be cut out and replaced before any finishing happens. If there is a musty smell or dark spotting, mold may be involved and that gets handled before anything else.

Test before scraping

Lots of Wichita homes built before the mid 80s have popcorn that could contain asbestos. Wet, damaged texture is exactly the kind you do not want to disturb without knowing. A lab test is cheap and fast. Our asbestos guide covers how that works.

One room or the whole house?

Since the damaged room needs new texture or a smooth finish anyway, a lot of people use it as the push to take popcorn out of the whole house. The setup cost is already being paid, so adding rooms is cheaper per square foot than doing them later. If only one room is going smooth, it can look odd next to popcorn in the hallway, so think about where the ceilings meet.
